Kingdom Hearts and my Baby Brother

Mina discusses how Kingdom Hearts helped her bond with her baby brother in a way she had previously been unable to. 

In my senior year of high school, my family had a “bonus baby” namely, my baby brother. While I adored my baby brother (and still do) I went off to college and I wasn’t able to spend much time with him during those years other than summer and Christmas break. A little over a year ago, I was sorting through my PS2 games and my brother started pointing at the cover of Kingdom Hearts 2. He kept talking about how he wanted to see Mickey. Realizing that he wouldn’t understand the game if we started with 2, I popped in Kingdom Hearts 1 and began my first play through in years.

I found out a lot about my baby brother during the brief chances I had to play Kingdom Hearts with him. He grasped (and was interested in!) the general idea of the plot (and Riku’s role in it), was ecstatic to see Captain Hook in the game, and was so terrified of Maleficent that he tried to argue that we should only stay in Traverse Town (he adored the walking moogles there). When Sora finally defeats Ansem, Mickey appears really briefly in order to save the worlds. My brother flipped out. One of his favorite characters had appeared, we had defeated the evil Ansem, everyone would be fine…he was the happiest boy in the world at that moment.

He still likes the games, and I still play them with him. We discuss which characters we would want to see in sequels, how new stories might go, etc. I am really glad I did it. I don’t know how much I would or could have bonded with him if we hadn’t started that playthrough in the first place. I can’t wait to play Dream Drop Distance with him. Knowing my brother, we’re going to have A LOT of fun with the dream eaters…
